Hot Spot Products of Biochemical Technology Empty Hot Spot Products of Biochemical Technology

The application of industrial biotechnology in chemicals production in large scales has obtained obvious achievements in many fields like agricultural chemicals, fine chemicals, commodity chemicals, medicines and high polymer materials. At present, there are about 130 industrialized processes which have been reported. Many large multinational corporations in Europe such as BASF, DSM, Lonza and Degussa AG have already turned their attention to biochemical technology and have put their products in markets. It is estimated by the U.S. National Council that there will be half of organic chemicals and materials made of biomass materials. Several kinds of hot spot products produced by biochemical technology will be introduced as follows.

(1)High polymer materials
The output of high polymer materials has exceeded 140 million tons per year, and the main product among high polymer materials is petrochemical materials. The polylactic acid factory of Cargill Dow Company and the factory to produce PTT through 1, 3-propanediol of E.I.Du Pont Company have realized the commercialization of biological materials. All these mentioned above prove that chemicals made of biological raw materials have obvious advantages to compete with products produced by petrochemical process. Polylactic acid is produced by the chemical process of lactic acid which is conversed by glucose. Cargill Dow has put its equipment which can realize the output to reach 140,000 tons per year into production. It is estimated that the global demand of polylactic acid will reach 11.5 to 23 million tons per year in 2020. In addition, PTT is another new kind of fiber material, of which the demand can exceed 1 million tons in 2020.

(2)Spice and health care products extracted from organisms
In Yunnan Province, a new resource of economic growth has formed by the rising biochemical industry. In 2001, the total value of output of biochemical industry reached 1.558 billion RMB, an increase of 53 percent compared to last year. There are nearly 400 kinds of spices resources in Yunnan, with only one in tenth developed. Therefore, the space for development is rather large. At present, the number of the enterprises focusing on spice and essence production is more than 50 and the output of natural spices takes up 30% of national output and export volume 15%. In Yunnan Province, the number of peasant households who are engaging in spices planting and processing has reached more than 400,000 with employed persons more than 2 million. Prinsepia Utilis Royle is considered as “Divine tree” in Naxi nationality among the people. At present, production line of Prinsepia Utilis Royle oil has been established in Lijiang to develop relevant health care products and cosmetics. In addition, the planting area of pollution-free Yin Di with special medical functions has reached 117,000 mu and industrialized production line of biopesticide with Yin Di as raw material. It is worthy for us to learn from Yunnan to make use of local resources to develop marketable products and accelerate economic growth.

Biochemical technology has brought various benefits whether for economy or for environment. Therefore, it is significant to develop biochemical technology further.
